The Skunk and the Chickens

One day Dad went out to feed the baby chicks. He went in a saw a whole bunch of dead chicks. Twenty-two died. One was alive and hurt. One was just fine.  Dad started looking around to see what happened. He found a live skunk hiding in the back corner.

Dad ran and got his gun and shot the skunk. Later we saw that the bullet went in his back and out his chest. We gathered up all the dead chickens with some maggots on them. We also got the dead skunk. We went to our pit and threw the dead animals in. The skunk had some pretty big claws.

We were sad to lose our chicks. The one that was hurt died a few days later. Now we have only one lonely chick. We plan to get some more chickens from our friend.

  1. Hi Jonathon, I loved LOVED reading your post, your description about where the bullet entered and exited was interesting. Lucky we dont have skunks here in Australia, but I do need to constantly check for foxes around our chickens. We have 6 hens and one rooster, we will be getting 10 more hens on Saturday. Did the skunk stink? I have heard them smell really bad and some people say you can wash yourself with tomato juice to get the smell off, is this true? It was interesting that some of the chicks had maggots on them so quickly. Keep writing, you are very good at it.

    Love Eva

    1. Yes they stink. You definitely want to stay away from a spraying skunk.
